Whether your business is in a tornado zone, a region that experiences blizzard conditions or somewhere in between, a generator can be an essential lifeline when power problems arise. Commercial models are usually well-built machines designed to be in service for the long haul. In fact, many can sustain 10,000-30,000 hours of operation time. Depending on how frequently it’s utilized, that could be the equivalent of 20-30 years. However, like an automobile, conducting routine maintenance is necessary to achieve this maximum lifespan.

Why Preventative Maintenance Matters

No business owner or manager wants to be forced to shut down operations because of power issues. Completing annual routine maintenance on your supplemental power source can prevent this dilemma by identifying generator problems before they become disruptive. In addition, you can schedule maintenance checks around your business schedule, minimizing interference with productivity and normal operations.

Maintenance Checklist

During preventive maintenance service, your generator should be checked from top to bottom. The checklist includes the following items:
• Examining the fuel and coolant systems for adequate fluid levels and leaks
• Ensuring components are adequately lubricated
• Inspecting batteries and terminals for corrosion
• Checking the alternator and transfer switch 
• Changing the engine oil and filter
• Replacing air and fuel filters
• Verifying that the drive belts have the appropriate tension
If you have a diesel unit, your technician should also check the fuel/water separators and service as needed.

Monthly Inspection

In addition to completing annual service, a quick visual monthly check is also extremely beneficial, especially after prolonged use. A monthly exam should include a review of the following details:
• Checking for cleanliness around the unit and removing any debris or rodent habitats
• Inspecting oil and coolant levels
• Assessing fuel level, if your system runs on diesel or propane
• Confirming there are no loose clamps or wires
